I know that blank stare.
It’s all too familiar.
Sure there are no words, but I get the message.
“So, what shall we talk about today?” it asks.
“Politics? Society? School? Love? Life? Greatness? Vulnerability?
Will we be rhyming today or just letting our thoughts flow freely?”
Hmmmmm….
“It’s ok. Take your time,” it says.
“I’ll be here whenever you’re ready.
Besides, it’s not like I can start without you.”
This brings me some comfort.
I pace back and forth from wall to wall,
practically creating a trail in the tan carpeting,
mentally scanning through countless topics.
Old.
Overdone.
Outdated.
How should I start this conversation?
What can be said that we haven’t already discussed?
How can I keep our friendship fresh and new?
I know it’ll accept me as I am, but will I be pleased with what I have to say?
Aha!
Aha!
And just like that, an idea strikes.
We’ll talk about the struggle to find something to talk about.
I’m ready to open up, so it opens up too.
“I knew you’d have something to say.
I’m pretty sure you always will.”
